The PlayStation often called a PS1 was launched by Sony in December 1994 in Japan, it made its way to the United States on September 9th the following year (1995) and then 20 days later into Europe. It can be claimed that the PlayStation was part to blame for launching a new wave of couch potatoes bringing great game titles like Gran Turismo, Tekken, Grand Theft Auto and Metal Gear Solid into thousands of homes around the globe.

The first successor was not surprisingly named the PlayStation 2, this not only appealed to consumers due to the advancement in technology but also its ability to read and play both CD's and DVD's. Sony also ensured that the new unit remained backwards compatible with the PlayStation one.

In November 2006 the PlayStation 3 was launched, a 3rd generation console with built-in Blu-ray disk. The PS3 comes with the ability to connect to the PlayStation Portable (PSP), it has a built-in hard drive and a major feature that distinguishes the PS3 from its predecessors is its unified online gaming service.
